A cup of Mexican spiced coffee with cinnamon and star anise in the background

Café de Olla is a sweet, spiced coffee that originated in Mexico. It's a great treat to enjoy after a swim on a hot afternoon or warm you through on a chilly fall day. The spices blend perfectly to create a comforting and sweet cup of coffee. We think it's the perfect mid-day beverage to enjoy with a batch of fresh Baked Churros!

Prep Time: 2 min

Cook time: 10 min

Yield: 3-6 cups

Ingredients

  • 6 cups water

  • 6-8 oz pure palm sugar or brown sugar or piloncillo

  • 2 cinnamon sticks

  • 2 whole cloves

  • 1 star anise

  • 6 tbsp fresh ground coffee

Directions

  1. In a medium saucepan add the water, sugar, cinnamon, cloves and star anise. Heat and stir to dissolve the sugar. Bring to a boil and let simmer for 5 min to infuse the spices.

  2. Add the coffee to the saucepan, bring to boil & then remove from the heat. Cover and let the coffee steep into the water for 5-10 minutes. The time you let it sit depends on your own preference so feel free to experiment to find your perfect amount.

  3. Strain through a fine mesh sieve or cheesecloth & enjoy!

Zhuzh it up!

  • Add in an orange peel with your spices to make a citrusy flavoured coffee.

  • You could serve it with kahlúa - I would recommend reducing the sugar if you would like to have it this way.
